About the position

As a Principal Mechanical Engineer at Westinghouse Electric Company, you will play a crucial role in supporting the construction and operation of nuclear power plants. Your responsibilities will encompass a variety of engineering tasks that are essential for ensuring the safety and efficiency of our energy solutions. This position requires a strong foundation in mechanical engineering principles, as well as a deep understanding of the nuclear environment and the associated engineering codes and standards. You will be involved in fluid system walk downs, reviewing P&IDs, and implementing design changes as necessary. Your work will also include providing engineering support requests and performing other duties as required to facilitate project success. In your day-to-day activities, you will compile data for project reports, collect and interpret field data, and assist in proposal efforts as directed. You will document technical data for management review and assist in the preparation of labor and material estimates, as well as design packages for clients. Your role will also involve the development of project design basis and specifications, ensuring that all engineering work conforms to applicable codes and standards, as well as company policies and procedures. Engineering reports will often be a key deliverable of your work, showcasing your ability to communicate complex technical information effectively. To thrive in this position, you will need to bring a minimum of 8 years of relevant professional experience in the nuclear environment, with a preference for candidates who have experience in equipment procurement within the power industry. Familiarity with mechanical engineering design and procurement processes, as well as knowledge of mechanical standards and codes, will be advantageous. You will also need to demonstrate excellent communication skills, as collaboration with teammates and specialists across various locations is essential for success in this role. Additionally, the ability to travel to project sites for short-term assignments is a requirement, as this will provide opportunities for rapid skill development and experience gain.

Responsibilities

  • Perform a variety of engineering work in support of construction at a nuclear power plant.
  • Conduct fluid system walk downs and review P&IDs.
  • Implement design changes and respond to engineering support requests.
  • Compile data for project reports and collect field data as required.
  • Assist in proposal efforts and document technical data for management review.
  • Prepare labor and material estimates and design packages for clients.
  • Collect and interpret engineering data and develop project design basis and specifications.
  • Ensure conformance to applicable engineering codes and standards as well as company policies and procedures.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent required.
  • Minimum 8 years of relevant professional experience in the nuclear environment, with a preference for 10+ years.
  • Familiarity with mechanical engineering design and procurement processes, mechanical standards (ASTM, ANSI, HEI, etc.), and codes (ASME III and/or B31.1).
  • Ability to obtain and maintain Unescorted Access within the controlled construction area.
  • Basic understanding of the impact and interrelationship of other disciplines' drawings (e.g., Electrical, Civil, and Structural) on design.
  • Ability to interpret and understand applicable NRC standards and regulations.
  • Willingness to travel to project sites for short-term assignments lasting from a couple of days to 6 months.
  • Working towards a professional engineering license; having passed the EIT/FE exam is a plus.
  • Advanced Microsoft Product skills, particularly in WORD and EXCEL.
  • Excellent communication skills.
