About the position

As a Product Designer focused on Design Systems at Etsy, you will play a crucial role in shaping the next evolution of our Design System, which is foundational to product development at Etsy. This position involves creating new components, updating existing ones, and maintaining comprehensive design documentation that ensures our products are brand-aligned, inclusive, and usable at scale. You will collaborate closely with Design, Product, and Engineering leadership to craft a growing landscape of systems that influence the future of Etsy's customer experience. Your work will have a multiplier effect, as the products you design will be utilized by all product teams and will impact every aspect of the customer journey. In this full-time role, you will report to the Senior Product Design Manager of UX Enablement. Alongside your salary, you will be eligible for an equity package, an annual performance bonus, and a competitive benefits package that supports you and your family. This position is open to candidates based in the United States, with a preference for those living within commuting distance of Etsy's Brooklyn Office Hub or in the San Francisco Bay Area. For those within commuting distance, in-office attendance is required once or twice per week, depending on proximity to the office. The Design Systems team at Etsy is responsible for crafting the patterns, guidelines, styles, and components that form the fabric of Etsy's customer experience. Our product teams utilize Etsy's mature Design System, known as "Collage," to create beautiful, engaging, inclusive, accessible, and useful products consistently for our buyers and sellers. You will work in a collaborative environment with a cross-functional team of web and native designers and engineers who are passionate about their work and committed to fostering a culture of creativity and innovation.

Responsibilities

  • Design and maintain components, patterns, styles, and guidelines for our web and native Design System and Figma component libraries.
  • Create and update clear, comprehensive documentation to support design and engineering usage for the Design System.
  • Leverage research and metrics to inform and validate design decisions, ensuring they are data-driven and user-centered.
  • Make sustainable, forward-thinking decisions to support future Design Systems growth.
  • Foster meaningful engagement with product designers by participating in support programs, such as Office Hours and educational workshops to promote Design System adoption.
  • Champion the use of Design Systems across Etsy.
  • Participate in weekly design critiques, workshops, all hands, and squad meetings.

Requirements

  • Experience working with and contributing to a Design System used by other designers and engineers.
  • Proficiency in Figma with experience building and maintaining component libraries.
  • Experience designing for web and native apps with a clear understanding of how to adapt to the unique aspects of each platform.
  • Strong visual and interaction design skills, from prototyping to polished execution with an eye for pixel-perfect detail.
  • Solid understanding of accessibility standards and a commitment to creating inclusive and accessible designs for all users.
  • Ability to think systemically to unravel complex problems and deliver scalable, effective solutions.
  • Strong collaboration skills to effectively partner with designers, product managers, and engineers to drive projects forward.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with user research methodologies and usability testing.
  • Familiarity with agile development processes and tools.
  • Knowledge of front-end development technologies such as HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.
