About the position

The Product Professional at Discover Financial Services plays a crucial role in maximizing the value of products developed by the team. This position is centered around delivering innovative products that enhance customer experience, meet customer needs, and create business value. The Product Professional acts as a servant leader, guiding the team without being a direct manager, and is responsible for structuring the team's work and delegating tasks effectively. This role requires a comprehensive understanding of product management, including the ability to coach and mentor team members, manage risks, and address customer-impacting issues in day-to-day operations. In this role, the Product Professional will build and maintain the product backlog, ensuring that it is prioritized to achieve the team's Objectives and Key Results (OKRs). They will also be responsible for maintaining key product documentation, such as customer journey maps and technical specifications. A critical aspect of the job is ensuring that product features and processes comply with Discover's regulatory, compliance, and risk management standards. This includes articulating requirements into use cases and agile stories, validating user story acceptance criteria, and inspecting product progress through each iteration. The Product Professional will lead Agile practices, including sprints and retrospectives, and will collaborate with cross-functional teams to support go-to-market strategies. They will define both functional and non-functional product requirements, ensuring completeness and consistency, and will work closely with business technology to create technical features that optimize system components. Additionally, this role involves managing project scope, deliverables, and timelines, while fostering a culture of accountability and ownership within the product team.

Responsibilities

  • Builds product backlog and prioritizes items to achieve Objectives and Key Results (OKRs).
  • Maintains key product documentation such as customer journey maps and technical specifications.
  • Ensures product features align with regulatory, compliance, and risk management standards.
  • Articulates requirements into use cases, agile stories, and acceptance criteria.
  • Leads Agile practices including sprints, planning, execution, and retrospectives.
  • Defines functional and non-functional product requirements and validates user story acceptance criteria.
  • Works with Data stewards to ensure data quality controls are implemented.
  • Partners with business technology to create necessary technical features.
  • Manages and communicates project scope, deliverables, and timelines.
  • Collaborates with cross-functional teams to support go-to-market strategies.
  • Builds a culture of accountability and ownership within the product team.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field or equivalent experience.
  • 3+ years of experience in product management or related roles.
  • Strong understanding of Agile methodologies and practices.
  • Experience in building and maintaining product backlogs.
  • Ability to articulate complex requirements into clear user stories and acceptance criteria.
  • Proven track record of managing product development processes.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with regulatory compliance in financial services.
  • Familiarity with customer journey mapping and technical specifications.
