About the position

The DNRC is seeking a Dam Engineer to provide engineering inspection, design, and contract management services for Department-owned State Water Projects. This role involves civil engineering expertise and project management within the Project Rehabilitation Section, focusing on the safe operation and maintenance of state-owned dams. The position requires licensure as a Montana Professional Engineer and involves various engineering disciplines including geotechnical, hydrologic, hydraulic, mechanical, and structural engineering.

Responsibilities

  • Document work products in appropriate formats and communicate with colleagues, water users' associations, contractors, and regulatory agencies.
  • Conduct annual and regulatory five-year inspections of dams and associated structures.
  • Identify, prioritize, design, and implement recommendations for operation, maintenance, and repairs.
  • Coordinate maintenance and repair efforts with water users' associations, regulatory agencies, contractors, and other parties.
  • Develop scopes, schedules, and budgets for dam repair and rehabilitation efforts.
  • Manage consulting engineers through feasibility, design, and construction administration for rehabilitation projects.
  • Review and approve technical submittals from consultants that may include elements of geotechnical, hydrologic, hydraulic, structural, mechanical, environmental, and economic engineering.
  • Develop and manage construction contracts on projects ranging from several thousand to tens of millions of dollars.
  • Provide part- or full-time construction oversight on a variety of construction projects.
  • Review and provide recommendations for construction documentation including schedules, payments, change orders, claims, inspections, and project closeout.
  • Direct the collection of field data and other information necessary to assess project performance and develop engineering designs.
  • Complete feasibility analyses to develop scope, schedule, and cost information related to dam repair activities.
  • Develop designs, plans, specifications, and bid packages for repair projects.
  • Conduct field work approximately 15% of the time, which may occur in various weather conditions and outside of scheduled work hours.

Requirements

  • A bachelor's degree in civil engineering that meets Accreditation Board of Engineering & Technology (ABET) standards, or another relevant field of engineering such as Environmental or Geological from an ABET accredited program.
  • Licensure as a Professional Engineer as required by 37-67-301, MCA and the Board of Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors (Licensure in Montana as a Professional Engineer is required within 6-months of hire).
  • A minimum of 2-years of applicable post-professional engineer licensure experience.
  • Expertise in a specialty area of civil engineering applicable to dams (e.g., geotechnical, hydrology, hydraulic, structural).

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in surveying, technical writing, and construction.
  • Specialized training in water project designs, construction methods and materials.
