About the position

The Programmer/Analyst-Senior (SRE Engineer - Mainframe) is a critical role within our organization, primarily responsible for providing technical support for various complex applications. This position requires a deep understanding of system monitoring and support tools, as well as the ability to perform technical analysis to troubleshoot incidents effectively. The individual will work closely with the Problem Review Team to track and mitigate known system problems, ensuring that corrective actions are implemented promptly. In this role, the engineer will frequently collaborate with external vendor representatives who interface with our internal applications. The responsibilities include developing both short and long-term solutions to daily issues, addressing defects, and resolving recurring problems. The engineer will also be tasked with building monitoring, alerting, and availability systems into applications to reduce operational toil. The position demands a strong grasp of industry standards and technology trends relevant to Huntington, driving process enhancements, streamlining communication, and optimizing delivery from discovery to deployment. The engineer will participate in troubleshooting efforts with other developers and contractors, documenting production issues that require code fixes, and assisting in validating and closing out defects. Additionally, managing customer-impacting incidents, providing Level 1 and Level 2 support for application and platform issues, and ensuring that monitoring alerts and system events are assessed and prioritized are key responsibilities. The engineer will also update the knowledge base with support information and escalate incidents to appropriate support teams or external vendors as necessary.

Responsibilities

  • Provide technical support for various complex applications.
  • Guide troubleshooting incidents and implement corrective actions.
  • Work closely with the Problem Review Team for tracking and mitigating known system problems.
  • Develop short and long-term solutions to daily issues, including defects and recurring problems.
  • Build monitoring, alerting, and availability systems into applications to reduce operational toil.
  • Drive process enhancements and optimize delivery through innovative practices.
  • Participate in troubleshooting and identifying problems with other developers and contractors.
  • Document production issues that require code fixes and assist with validating and closing defects.
  • Manage customer-impacting incidents, including business impact assessment and technical resolution.
  • Provide Level 1 & Level 2 support for application and platform issues.
  • Ensure monitoring alerts and system events are assessed, prioritized, and assigned.
  • Update the knowledge base with support information and provide clarifications on data issues.
  • Escalate incidents to appropriate interfacing support teams or external teams.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in a relevant field.
  • 6+ years of experience in Software Engineering and Site Reliability.
  • Experience with Z/OS, MVS, and supporting tools and languages (TSO, ISPF, COBOL, Easytrieve, JCL, IBM utilities, SORT, FileAid, Xpediter, ChangeMan, AbendAid).
  • Hands-on experience with monitoring tools such as Dynatrace, Splunk, Zenoss.
  • Experience with Batch Scheduling tools such as Zeke, Zena, etc.
  • Hands-on experience with Mainframes and SQL Server or equivalent.

Nice-to-haves

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • In-depth knowledge of different SDLC methodologies including Waterfall and Agile.
  • Knowledge of ITIL tools such as ServiceNow.
  • Experience with problem resolution support specific to CICS and MQ on z issues.
  • Knowledge of Java skill set and Cloud Infrastructure such as AWS.
