About the position

WSP USA is seeking a Project Accountant for their Tempe, AZ office, responsible for providing accounting and financial support to project managers and teams. The role involves managing project costs, budgets, and financial reporting for medium-sized projects, ensuring compliance with accounting practices and delivering high-quality financial documentation. The Project Accountant will collaborate with project managers to establish budgets, track financial performance, and ensure accurate invoicing and contract management.

Responsibilities

  • Manage and analyze the collection, recording, and allocation of project costs and revenue.
  • Ensure accurate project profit and loss calculations and communicate financial performance to management.
  • Oversee lifecycle project accounting from creating project accounts to project close-out.
  • Perform detailed accounting tasks related to project contracts and billing events.
  • Partner with project managers to establish and update project budgets.
  • Generate project financial reports and evaluate for necessary escalations.
  • Authorize access to project accounts and manage expense transfers in compliance with accounting practices.
  • Investigate project variances and submit variance reports to management.
  • Verify contract and change order characteristics for projects.
  • Monitor key indicators for managing problem projects and keep management informed.
  • Ensure draft invoices are accurate and finalize invoice approval with the Project Manager.
  • Evaluate subconsultant invoice submittals and manage subcontractor payments.
  • Identify and record unpaid contract billings and follow up on delinquent accounts receivable.
  • Attend project-related meetings to inform the team about project financials and actions needed.
  • Create and submit government reports related to projects.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Business, or closely-related discipline.
  • 3 to 5 years of relevant post-education experience in accounting and project contracts.
  • Working knowledge of project accounting principles and practices.
  • Analytical mindset with sound independent judgment in financial decision-making.
  • Effective interpersonal and communication skills for diverse audiences.
  • Strong self-leadership with attention to detail and results orientation.
  • Proficiency in technical writing and accounting software, especially MS Excel.

Nice-to-haves
