About the position

The PSMS Instructor & Machinist is responsible for training students and staff in the basics of machining, fabrication, and safe equipment use within the Krieger School of Arts and Sciences. This role involves hands-on instruction in various fabrication methods and routine equipment maintenance, while also coordinating with faculty and staff for training and fabrication activities.

Responsibilities

  • Provide hands-on instruction and training in machining and fabrication methods to students and staff.
  • Develop and refine safety and machine operation course curriculums, including teaching materials and course outlines.
  • Conduct shop safety course instruction for students and staff to gain access to machine tools and equipment.
  • Deliver targeted instruction on specific machine tools and equipment in small group settings.
  • Provide one-on-one in-shop instruction on the safe operation of machine shop tools and equipment.
  • Oversee the upkeep and maintenance of the Chem Shop and PSMS, including replenishing supplies and organizing tooling.
  • Provide machining services to the University research and instructional community, including fabrication of precision components.

Requirements

  • High school diploma/GED.
  • A minimum of five years' experience in a research and development machine shop fabricating precision parts.
  • Excellent communication and instructional skills.
  • Proficiency with mechanical design and reading engineering blueprints.
  • Proficiency with programming, setup, and operation of CNC machine tools.
  • Proficiency with manual lathes and mills.

Nice-to-haves

  • Machinist and shop manager experience strongly preferred.
  • Highly competent in g-code programming.
  • Proficiency with MasterCAM CNC programming language.
  • Proficiency with SolidWorks and CREO.
  • Experience with arc, Mig, and/or TIG welding.
  • Experience with CNC laser cutters and coordinate measuring machines.

Benefits

  • Full-time employment with a competitive salary range of $29.80 - $52.50 per hour, commensurate with experience.
  • Regular Monday-Friday schedule from 8am to 4:30pm.
