About the position

The Psychologist 4 position at the Department of Corrections in Tumwater, WA, is a full-time, permanent role focused on improving public safety through forensic risk evaluation techniques. The primary responsibility of this position is to conduct comprehensive risk evaluations that inform housing decisions, treatment planning, and interventions aimed at reducing the risk of violent re-offense among incarcerated individuals. This role requires the application of actuarial-based risk evaluation and structured professional judgment to identify dynamic risk factors and develop targeted intervention strategies. The recommendations made by the Psychologist 4 will significantly impact decisions regarding the liberty of individuals with a history of violence, necessitating careful consideration of various psychological and forensic factors. The Psychologist 4 will be responsible for conducting statewide forensic risk evaluations, particularly for MAX custody referrals across all Washington Department of Corrections (WADOC) facilities. This includes developing and implementing violence risk interventions tailored to the needs of incarcerated individuals. The evaluations will be documented in detailed reports that will be shared with the HQ MAX Custody Committee and primary therapists to inform treatment planning and other interventions. The position also involves staying current with the latest literature and continuing education requirements related to forensic risk evaluations, as well as assisting in the development and delivery of relevant training programs. In addition to conducting evaluations, the Psychologist 4 will be expected to provide training on topics such as suicide prevention and response, and work collaboratively with multi-disciplinary teams to foster effective working relationships. The role requires a commitment to maintaining a safe and humane corrections system while promoting positive change in the lives of individuals within the correctional environment.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct statewide forensic risk evaluations for MAX custody referrals at WADOC facilities.
  • Develop and implement violence risk interventions for incarcerated individuals.
  • Document evaluations in reports for the HQ MAX Custody Committee and primary therapists.
  • Stay current on literature and continuing education related to forensic risk evaluations.
  • Assist in the development and delivery of Behavioral Health trainings.
  • Provide training on topics such as Suicide Prevention and Response.
  • Review professional publications and inform Behavioral Health leadership of relevant findings.
  • Maintain effective working relationships across multi-disciplinary teams.

Requirements

  • One year of postdoctoral psychology experience.
  • Possession of a license to practice psychology in the state of Washington.
  • At least one year of experience working independently to link client needs with resources.
  • Knowledge of conducting and interpreting psychological evaluations of violence risk.
  • Experience with psychological evaluation tools such as PCL-R, V-RAG, and HCR-20.
  • Applied knowledge of the DSM 5 of Mental Health Disorders.
  • Effective report writing skills, including data synthesis and observations.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in providing individual and group mental health treatment in a correctional setting.
  • A Doctoral degree in Psychology from an accredited school.
  • Three years of post-doctoral psychology experience.
  • Knowledge of community providers and resources for providing services.
  • Proficiency in a language other than English, including American Sign Language.
  • Additional education or certification relevant to this work.
  • Ability to foster and maintain effective working relationships across multi-disciplinary teams.
