About the position

The Public Affairs Program Manager at Black Hills Energy is responsible for managing public affairs initiatives throughout Iowa. This role involves collaborating with public affairs colleagues, operations leadership, and other internal partners to achieve company goals. The manager will represent the utility to external partners, fostering strong relationships with communities and customers through effective communication and engagement strategies.

Responsibilities

  • Cultivate effective communication channels and relationships with community, business, and government agencies.
  • Develop and execute a proactive media relations strategy to support local and company-wide initiatives.
  • Partner with internal teams to craft and implement strategic communications plans for regulatory and legislative matters.
  • Facilitate the company's sponsorship, donation, and volunteer initiatives within the community.
  • Support the Black Hills Cares initiative and collaborate with local energy assistance providers.
  • Participate in company and public affairs team functions and projects.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Communication, Business Administration, Marketing, Public Administration, Journalism, or a related field.
  • Minimum of five years of experience in the utility industry or a related field such as communications or public administration.

Nice-to-haves

  • Knowledge of communications, operations, franchise laws, and regulatory processes.
  • Proven teamwork and collaboration skills.
  • Effective project management skills, including planning and organization.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, interpersonal skills, and presentation skills.
  • Solid understanding of Microsoft Office applications.
