The Public Safety Aide position is a non-sworn law enforcement role focused on handling non-confrontational and non-emergency criminal incidents. This includes responding to police calls such as gas drive-offs and loud noise complaints where no suspect is present, and a written police report is necessary. The role is designed to enhance the efficiency and operations of the Uniform Patrol Division at the Hardee County Sheriff's Office. Public Safety Aides will work alongside sworn deputies, providing essential support within the legal boundaries of their position. It is important to note that this role does not grant the authority to carry firearms or make arrests. The Public Safety Aide will be responsible for completing detailed written and computer-generated reports, conducting checks on faulty equipment, and verifying vehicle identification numbers (VIN). They will also check on abandoned vehicles, provide traffic assistance, and assist with funeral escorts. The aide will be tasked with recording and processing found property, assisting with preliminary crime scene investigations, and processing minor crime scenes by collecting evidence. Additionally, they will perform various other law enforcement duties of a non-emergency nature as designated by the Division Commander or Supervisor. The position adheres to a community-oriented policing philosophy, requiring frequent citizen interactions and the provision of criminal intelligence through reports to the Investigative Services Division and Uniform Patrol Division. Public Safety Aides may be required to work overtime or alternate hours to ensure the efficient operation of the agency. The position is classified as Emergency and Essential, indicating its critical nature in public safety operations. Additional functions may include assisting in processing major crime scenes and undertaking specialized assignments directed by the Sheriff, such as investigating missing persons. A key aspect of this role is fostering and maintaining relationships with community stakeholders, particularly those serving the elder and homeless populations of Hardee County.
