About the position

The Public Utilities Dispatcher is responsible for operating a multi-line phone system, routing calls, processing work orders, and monitoring city control systems such as SCADA and OMS. This role involves performing dispatch tasks, managing communications with field personnel, and ensuring efficient operation of public utilities services.

Responsibilities

  • Operates a multi-line phone system and routes calls.
  • Processes work orders and monitors city control systems including SCADA and OMS.
  • Performs general clerical duties for the Public Utilities department.
  • Operates a radio console to receive and transmit voice messages to field personnel.
  • Receives incoming calls, evaluates requests for services, and collects essential information.
  • Acts on requests from field personnel for information and assistance.
  • Enters locates into Texas 811 and work orders into Asset Essentials database.
  • Generates weekly reports of open work orders for Public Utility Directors.
  • Maintains office files and scans documents to an electronic file system.
  • Monitors and manages the Outage Management System and reports outages.
  • Monitors and operates SCADA and AMI, reporting alarms as necessary.
  • Notifies Police and Fire Departments of road closures due to construction.
  • Prepares daily work schedules for Public Utilities.
  • Responds to after-hour events such as storms, fulfilling dispatch duties.
  • Communicates in a professional and clear manner, especially in stressful situations.

Requirements

  • High school graduation or equivalent; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • One or more years of related experience and/or training.
  • Knowledge of standard office practices and procedures.
  • Ability to operate a multi-line phone system and computers, including word processing and Excel.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in public utilities or dispatching roles.
  • Familiarity with Texas 811 and Asset Essentials database.
