About the position

The University of New Mexico Press, the largest book publisher in the state of New Mexico, is seeking a dynamic and innovative Publicist to join its sales and marketing team. This role is pivotal in developing and executing media campaigns for new book releases, working closely with authors, editorial staff, and media contacts. The Publicist will be responsible for maintaining relationships with print and broadcast media, scheduling interviews, and assembling contact lists for review copies. Additionally, the role involves writing press releases, pitch letters, and promotional copy, as well as developing press kits and managing social media initiatives. The Publicist will oversee book award submissions and participate in press meetings on behalf of the department, collaborating with internal production and editorial staff as necessary. The position may also require representing the press at select press events and conferences, which could occur during weekends or evenings. Responsibilities

  • Develop media campaigns for new books in collaboration with authors and editorial staff.
  • Maintain relationships with print and broadcast media.
  • Schedule interviews and assemble contact lists for review copies.
  • Write press releases, pitch letters, and promotional copy.
  • Develop press kits and manage social media initiatives.
  • Oversee book award submissions and participate in press meetings.
  • Collaborate with internal production and editorial staff as necessary.
  • Maintain database records and files.
  • Assist with miscellaneous duties as needed.
  • Represent the press at select press events and conferences.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field.
  • At least 6 months of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to plan, organize, and coordinate media activities and special events.
  • Knowledge of marketing strategies, processes, initiatives, and resources.
  • Ability to use independent judgment to manage and impart information to the media and various audiences.
  • Ability to gather data, analyze information, and prepare reports.
  • Ability to work independently and within a team environment.
  • Demonstrated commitment to serving a diverse population of students, employees, and community members.
  • Ability to multi-task and schedule priorities.
  • Knowledge of software applications, including Microsoft Office Suite and Adobe Creative Suite.

Nice-to-haves

  • Knowledge of the publishing/book industry.
  • Experience with software applications such as Cision and HubSpot.
