About the position

The Recreation Aid (Lifeguard) position at the Department of the Air Force is primarily responsible for ensuring the safety of individuals in assigned swimming areas, performing rescues, administering first aid, and maintaining the swimming facility. This part-time, temporary role requires a valid lifeguard certification and involves monitoring activities, conducting swimming lessons, and participating in in-service training to maintain lifesaving skills.

Responsibilities

  • Monitors activities within assigned swimming areas.
  • Rescues and resuscitates individuals in danger of drowning and renders first aid to injuries.
  • Assists in cleaning and maintaining the swimming facility.
  • Performs guest control duties.
  • Verifies that customers are authorized to use the facility by checking appropriate identification.
  • Assists water safety instructor in conducting swimming lessons.
  • Participates in required in-service training and maintains currency, capability, and certification to perform lifesaving and water rescue, and to administer basic first aid and CPR.

Requirements

  • Must possess a current and valid nationally recognized lifeguard certification covering lifesaving and water rescue methods, skills, and procedures.
  • Must possess a current and valid nationally recognized basic first aid certification.
  • Must possess a current and valid nationally recognized CPR certification which includes adult, child, and infant procedures.
  • Position requires pre-employment screening for swimming ability, rescue skills, and CPR skills.
  • Participation in required in-service training and maintenance of physical capabilities to perform rescues throughout the period of employment are conditions of employment for this position.

Nice-to-haves

  • Basic knowledge of lifesaving, first aid, and CPR as would be learned through an approved course leading to certification.
  • Limited knowledge of swimming facility rules, work procedures, equipment, and materials to perform standing, recurring tasks.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, orally.
  • Demonstrated current physical ability to swim to and rescue swimmers of all age groups up to and including adult and to administer CPR to adults, children, and infants.
