About the position

The City of Kalispell is seeking a Recreation Programmer with a focus on Community Events to join the Parks & Recreation Department. This full-time position, under the direction of the Recreation Superintendent, is responsible for organizing, coordinating, and supervising a variety of recreational programming. This includes after-school programs, youth and adult sports, youth and adult camps, and special events. The role requires a high level of interpretive judgment and decision-making, as well as the ability to work nontraditional hours, including evenings and weekends, based on programming needs and special events. The Recreation Programmer will supervise seasonal recreation employees and volunteers, providing guidance, training, and technical assistance necessary for effective program delivery. The position involves frequent public interaction, requiring excellent communication skills and the ability to handle inquiries and complaints tactfully. The Recreation Programmer will also be responsible for developing and promoting programs through social media, tracking participation through databases, and preparing budget estimates and activity reports. In addition to the essential duties, the Recreation Programmer will serve on various employee and community committees, assist with procurement of services and supplies, and work closely with the Recreation Superintendent to implement and review program policies. This role is vital in enhancing community engagement through recreational activities and ensuring high-quality service delivery to the public.

Responsibilities

  • Organize and supervise recreational programming including after-school programs, youth and adult sports, and special events.
  • Plan and schedule special events and recreational activities.
  • Supervise classes, workshops, and activities for participants in recreation programs.
  • Recruit, hire, train, evaluate, and discipline seasonal recreation employees and volunteers as necessary.
  • Respond to inquiries and complaints, following incident protocols and emergency procedures.
  • Conduct site visits to evaluate programs and determine public needs.
  • Assist in preparing budget estimates and activity reports.
  • Develop social media posts to promote programs and community awareness.
  • Utilize databases for tracking participation in programs and events.
  • Schedule and assist in supervision of out-of-school camps and afterschool programs.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent with five years of progressively responsible recreation programming experience, or a degree in Recreation Administration, Sports Management, Leisure Studies, Physical Education, or a closely related field with two years of experience.
  • Knowledge in planning, organizing, and implementing sports programming and recreational activities.
  • Skilled in using computers and related software, including Microsoft Office and other necessary programs.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing with various stakeholders.
  • Ability to manage multiple assignments and priorities simultaneously.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in community engagement and outreach programs.
  • Familiarity with social media marketing strategies for program promotion.
