About the position

At Regions, the Regions Business Capital Underwriter is a client-facing role, responsible for conducting and evaluating new corporate and commercial loans. The individual will work directly with Origination, Credit Risk, Client Coverage, Capital Markets, and other areas of the bank to lead the analysis of credit opportunities, and underwriting of credit exposure while seamlessly delivering value to Regions' prospects and customers, balancing the risk tolerance of Regions Business Capital with new business objectives and client retention. The Underwriter leads the credit process to ensure that transactions are reviewed thoroughly and in a timely manner, adhering to internal policies and procedures. They independently conduct assessments for borrower risk profiles, financial performance, collateral strength, industry position, and overall creditworthiness. This role requires balancing the risk tolerance of business objectives and client acquisition while working closely with Origination to structure proposed transactions. In addition, the Underwriter screens new opportunities and underwrites asset-based loans, ensuring that behaviors drive a positive customer experience. They independently identify risks and mitigants relevant to transactions, leading and owning the underwriting process to ensure expeditious execution of new business transactions in line with client expectations and business risk tolerance and guidelines. Acting as the central hub with origination and credit risk, the Underwriter supports strong working relationships with key internal partners. The role also involves preparing comprehensive and objective memos and models analyzing historical and projected financial performance, collateral quality, borrowing base structure, industry characteristics, capital structure, and other credit attributes. The Underwriter presents findings and recommendations to Senior Management and the Credit Committee, engages in loan documentation and closing activities with borrowers, counsel, and relationship management, and may include direct or indirect supervision and direction of the day-to-day activities of junior professionals. This position is exempt from timekeeping requirements under the Fair Labor Standards Act and is not eligible for overtime pay, but it is incentive eligible.

Responsibilities

  • Leads the credit process to ensure that transactions are reviewed thoroughly and in a timely manner, adhering to internal policies and procedures.
  • Independently conducts an assessment for borrower risk profile, financial performance, collateral strength, industry position, and overall creditworthiness.
  • Balances the risk tolerance of business objectives and client acquisition.
  • Works closely with Origination to structure proposed transactions.

  • Supports strong working relationships with key internal partners.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting or related field
  • Nine (9) years underwriting and/or portfolio management experience
  • Ability to manage execution of multiple complex transactions simultaneously
  • Ability to openly exchange ideas and opinions, elevate concerns, and follow policies and procedures as defined
  • Ability to quickly develop working relationships with prospective borrowers and key referral sources (private equity firms, investment banks, bank groups, etc.) and to communicate at all levels
  • Deep understanding of loan structuring, financial analysis, collateral analysis, legal documentation and industry considerations affecting transactions, including experience specific to ABL lending
  • Exercises independent judgment and applies prudent risk mitigation principles
  • Extensive track record of underwriting, risk management, and/or relationship management, and closing loans.
