About the position

The Registered Nurse (RN) position at OU Health is a vital role within the Medicine Specialty Unit located at the University of Oklahoma Medical Center. This unit is designed to provide comprehensive care to patients with a variety of complex health issues, including hypertension, diabetes, sepsis, renal failure, liver failure, fractures, osteomyelitis, pyelonephritis, and pancreatitis. The unit consists of 31 beds and operates under a collaborative care model, where Registered Nurses (RNs), Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs), and Clinical Technicians (CTAs) work together to ensure the best patient outcomes. The RN will be responsible for monitoring patients' conditions, assessing their needs, and providing education and support to both patients and their families. As a Registered Nurse in this unit, you will be expected to assume responsibility for an assigned group of patients, document their responses to nursing interventions, assist physicians during examinations, and administer medications as prescribed. You will also be responsible for monitoring physiological data, initiating and regulating intravenous infusions, and communicating effectively with patients and their families about care plans and hospital procedures. Responsibilities

  • Assumes responsibility for an assigned group of patients.
  • Documents patient responses to nursing interventions and prescribed medical treatments; notes all changes in physician orders on assigned patients.
  • Assists physician in the examination of patients and in performing minor diagnostic procedures and treatment.
  • Obtains and monitors physiological data of patients, observes the physiological manifestations of patients and intervenes when necessary.
  • Administers medication as prescribed; initiates, regulates, and monitors intravenous infusions and blood products.
  • Delivers patient care competently.
  • Interacts with family and patient in sharing care plan while in the hospital and at time of discharge.
  • Informs patient and family of hospital procedures.
  • Makes referrals regarding patient care needs to appropriate personnel.
  • Delegates tasks to support staff.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Graduation from an approved school of nursing.
  • Possession of a valid temporary license or permanent license issued by the Oklahoma State Board of Nursing as a Registered Nurse prior to entrance on duty.
  • BLS (American Heart Association) certification upon hire.
  • Knowledge of professional nursing theory, practices, techniques, and procedures.
  • Ability to organize, plan, coordinate, and evaluate nursing services and apply nursing techniques.
  • Ability to maintain good working relationships with other employees.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to respond effectively to cultural and language needs of patients and visitors.
  • Some computer skills.

Nice-to-haves
