About the position

The Relief W.I.C. CPA position at Maniilaq Association involves providing and documenting client services to participants of the Women, Infants and Children Program. This includes W.I.C. Certifications, nutritional counseling, breastfeeding support, education, and training in Kotzebue and surrounding villages. The role also requires assisting the Program Coordinator in maintaining grant compliance.

Responsibilities

  • Independently determines W.I.C. eligibility (categorical, residency, income and nutritional risk) and certification.
  • Verify eligibility status of applicants who receive Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Food Program (SNAP), Alaska Temporary Assistance Program (ATAP), Medicaid and Denali Kid Care.
  • Accurately measures anthropometrics and hemoglobin, identifies nutrition risk factors, provides nutrition education, prescribes the appropriate food packages, issues benefits and completes coordination of other W.I.C. services.
  • Develops nutrition plans and provides accurate nutrition education according to the Alaska W.I.C. Program Policy and Procedures.
  • Determines effectiveness of interventions and revises plan of care based on expected outcomes.
  • Identifies high-risk clients based on objective criteria and refers them to the Registered Dietitian (R.D.).
  • Provides basic breastfeeding support, follow-ups, referrals and education.
  • Keeps an accurate inventory of breast pumps and notifies the W.I.C. Coordinator when pumps need to be ordered.
  • Refers clients to other health programs such as Public Health Nursing, Maternal Child Health, Public Assistance and Denali Kid Care.
  • Organizes and maintains a systematic work system to ensure W.I.C. applications are received, dated and timely processed for eligibility and certification.
  • Assists W.I.C. Coordinator with nutrition education material development.
  • Completes monthly nutrition education group class as assigned by the W.I.C. Coordinator.
  • Completes a time study of activities for one week when working a full 40 hour week.
  • Mails Notification of Termination letters for participants by the end of the 3rd week of each month.
  • Assists the W.I.C. Coordinator with Batch Issuance as assigned.
  • Assists the W.I.C. Coordinator with participant retention and growth using various reports.
  • Educates and assists participants shopping with Balto Box delivered by Span-Elite services.
  • Assists with vendor monitoring as assigned.
  • May travel to the villages to assist with W.I.C. outreach, certification and other related activities.
  • Maintains federal and state W.I.C. Program Guidelines in administering W.I.C. program.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent plus one year minimum W.I.C. program or relevant experience.
  • Successful completion of the Alaska W.I.C. Competent Professional Authority (CPA)/Paraprofessional Training program and Certification Exam.
  • Other qualifying education in a related field may be considered in lieu of Alaska W.I.C. CPA/Paraprofessional Training.
  • Knowledge of people, culture and/or language of the Northwest Arctic Region preferred.
  • Ability to perform duties with minimal supervision.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills.
