About the position

The Research Assistant 2 position at Oregon Health & Science University involves working in the lab of Dr. Tafesse within the Department of Molecular Microbiology and Immunology. The role focuses on studying how pathogens utilize host factors for invasion and propagation, with a particular emphasis on the role of cellular lipids in bacterial and viral pathogenesis. The candidate will engage in various laboratory techniques and contribute to research on significant pathogens such as M. tuberculosis and SARS-CoV-2.

Responsibilities

  • Perform microscopy, phagocytosis, and other molecular and biochemical techniques (cloning, microscopy, tissue culture, flow cytometry, etc.)
  • Generate CRISPR/cas9 knockout cell lines (design sgRNA sequences, generate cell line that expresses Cas9, isolate clones, and characterize knockout candidates)
  • Perform protein purifications in bacterial and mammalian systems, especially various nanobodies
  • Ensure quality control of equipment, reagents, and cellular components
  • Order and maintain inventory of laboratory supplies and reagents.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's in relevant field; OR Associate's AND 3 years of relevant experience; OR 4 years of relevant experience; OR equivalent combination of training and experience.

Nice-to-haves

  • Bachelor's Degree (4 yr) with major courses in the field of research/Immunology
  • 0-4 years of research wet lab experience at the undergraduate level
  • Good organizational skills and excellent attention to details
  • Must be willing to learn and grow
  • Excellent documentation skills
  • Ability to perform as a team member
  • Must have good interpersonal skills
