About the position

The Research Associate IV position at the J. Craig Venter Institute is responsible for conducting molecular biology projects that support scientific investigations. This role involves mentoring junior research associates and requires a strong background in laboratory techniques and molecular biology. The position emphasizes independent project work, data evaluation, and collaboration with investigators.

Responsibilities

• Perform basic and specialized molecular biology techniques with limited supervision.
• Conduct cDNA library construction, random library construction, PCR, RTPCR, Southern and Northern blots, RNA slot blots, and other molecular biology techniques.
• Maintain stocks of all reagents necessary for molecular biology techniques.
• Keep accurate written records and biological stocks of work performed.
• Perform daily maintenance of laboratory equipment.
• Interact with investigators on experimental planning and analysis.
• Mentor Research Associates (I-III's) in relevant techniques and provide feedback on their performance.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in Biology, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, or related field with a minimum of four years of experience, or a Master's degree with a minimum of two years of experience.
• Hands-on laboratory experience, preferably in an independent project.
• Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and a high level of initiative.
• Ability to mentor and provide guidance to junior research associates.
• Strong data evaluation skills and ability to assist in experimental design.
• Familiarity with standard laboratory equipment and safety procedures.
• Strong computer skills, including word processing, spreadsheet software, and experience with relational databases.

Nice-to-haves

• Experience with sequence analysis software and expression analysis software.
• Familiarity with UNIX environment.
