About the position

The Research Associate Specialist (Weed Science) at Louisiana State University is a grant-funded, non-tenure track position focused on assisting the lead program scientist in managing research related to weed management in various crops. The role involves field preparation, data collection, pesticide application, and maintenance of research plots, requiring a highly motivated individual with a background in agriculture.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the lead program scientist in managing a research program on weed management in crops such as soybean, cotton, sweetpotato, corn, wheat, and grain sorghum.
  • Prepare fields and establish field plans for research.
  • Operate and use farm equipment for research purposes.
  • Schedule, collect, and enter data into computer systems.
  • Prepare presentations based on collected data.
  • Apply pesticides in research plots and maintain research plots.
  • Calibrate equipment and take detailed notes of daily operations.
  • Manage daily operations and duties of transient workers in the program.
  • Maintain all program field and laboratory equipment and order supplies as needed.
  • Keep records of research plots, program equipment, vehicle records, and pesticide inventory.
  • Travel to additional LSU AgCenter research stations and off-station trial locations.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in agronomy, plant pest management, plant science, biological sciences, agri-business, or a closely related field.
  • Previous experience in an agricultural field and greenhouse experimentation.
  • Demonstrable skills in organization, time management, and pesticide handling.
  • Proficiency in word-processing, spreadsheet, PowerPoint, and database management software.
  • Acceptable written and oral communication skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with field research and data analysis in agricultural settings.
  • Familiarity with LSU AgCenter research protocols and procedures.
