About the position

The Princeton University Art Museum is seeking an exceptional Research Associate for a temporary position that will begin as soon as possible and last for twelve months. This role is pivotal in supporting the documentation and display of the Museum's extensive collection of photography. The Research Associate will report directly to the Curator of Photography and will be involved in a variety of tasks that contribute to the overall mission of the Museum. The Museum, with a rich collecting history dating back to 1755, is recognized as one of the leading university art museums in the United States. It houses over 115,000 works of art that span from ancient to contemporary periods and represent cultures from around the globe. The Museum is dedicated to enhancing Princeton's teaching and research missions while also serving as a cultural gateway for visitors from around the world. Currently, the Museum presents exhibitions in two downtown venues and is actively touring collections both nationally and internationally. With the anticipated opening of its newly reconceived building in spring 2025, the Museum will launch a new exhibitions program that includes annual exhibitions both on-site and on tour. The Research Associate will engage in various responsibilities related to the Museum's photography collection, which may include conducting provenance research, acquisition research, responding to inquiries about the collections, and contributing relevant information to the collections database. This position requires a strong commitment to detail and the ability to handle confidential and sensitive information effectively.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct provenance research related to the Museum's photography collection.
  • Perform acquisition research to support the Museum's collection development.
  • Respond to collections queries from staff and the public.
  • Contribute relevant information to the collections database.
  • Assist in the documentation and display of the Museum's photography holdings.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Art History or a related field.
  • Strong research skills and superb writing abilities.
  • Aptitude for organization and administration.
  • Knowledge of basic photographic techniques and historical developments in photography.
  • Ability to work independently or collaboratively as needed.
  • Attention to detail and ability to handle confidential information.

Nice-to-haves

  • Master's degree in Art History or a related field is strongly preferred.
