About the position
Research Internships at Microsoft provide a dynamic environment for research careers with a network of world-class research labs led by globally-recognized scientists and engineers, who pursue innovation in a range of scientific and technical disciplines to help solve complex challenges in diverse fields, including computing, healthcare, economics, and the environment. Within Azure Data, the databases team builds and maintains Microsoft's operational Database systems. We store and manage data in a structured way to enable a multitude of applications across various industries. We are on a journey to enable developer friendly, mission-critical, AI enabled operational Databases across relational, non-relational and OSS offerings. Microsoft Azure database platform is seeking Research Interns to join us in pushing the boundaries of our database platform performance by incorporating AI capabilities with large language models (LLMs) and Machine Learning. As a Research Intern, you will have the chance to work with leading researchers and PostgreSQL core committers group at Microsoft to create innovative solutions to challenging research problems in the above technical areas. You will also have the opportunity to publish your work at top conferences.
Responsibilities
- Put inquiry and theory into practice.
- Collaborate with fellow doctoral candidates and researchers.

Requirements
- Currently accepted or enrolled in a PhD program in Computer Science field.
- Submit a minimum of two reference letters, a cover letter, and relevant work or research samples.
Nice-to-haves
- Proficient understanding of database fundamentals (query processing, storage internals).
- Knowledge on PostgreSQL Database.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with other researchers and product development teams.
- Proficient interpersonal skills, cross-group, and cross-culture collaboration.
