About the position

The Research Scientists I / II position at Colorado State University focuses on advanced laser diagnostics within the Center for Laser Sensing and Diagnostics. The role involves contributing expertise in laser diagnostics to support research projects in advanced propulsion and hydrogen emissions monitoring. Candidates will engage in developing and applying new laser diagnostic techniques, particularly for electric propulsion systems and atmospheric hydrogen emissions, while producing high-quality research and presenting findings at conferences and in peer-reviewed publications.

Responsibilities

  • Contribute laser diagnostic expertise to research projects in advanced propulsion and hydrogen emissions monitoring.
  • Develop and apply new laser diagnostics for electric propulsion systems, focusing on species-specific measurements.
  • Design, develop, and optimize the Photoacoustic Stimulated Raman Spectroscopy (PARS) system for atmospheric hydrogen emissions measurement.
  • Conduct experimental research, analyze data, and publish findings in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Present research findings at conferences and engage with the scientific community.

Requirements

  • Ph.D. in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering or a related field.
  • Minimum of 7 years of total experience in hands-on laser spectroscopy and/or laser diagnostics.
  • Ability to design, conduct, analyze, and publish experimental research as evidenced by a strong publication record.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with trace-gas or species-specific detection via laser spectroscopy using techniques such as LIF, TLDAS, WMS, or photoacoustic spectroscopy.
  • Experience in the operation of plasmas and plasma sources within vacuum chamber setups.
  • Familiarity with pulsed laser diagnostic techniques for gas-phase or plasma measurements.
