About The Position

The Development Services & Permits Division facilitates safe and responsible development, construction, and occupancy of buildings and properties in our community. In 2023, the division issued over 57,000 permits with a construction value of $11.15B. In addition, the division conducted over 41,000 inspections and almost 85,000 plan reviews. We strive to provide prompt and courteous service to our customers, ensuring compliance with all applicable laws and regulations. Our goal is to promote public safety, protect the environment, and support economic growth through the issuance of permits and inspections. We are committed to transparency, accountability, and continuous improvement in all aspects of our operations. This position reviews and approves permits for development on residential property in unincorporated Harris County in accordance with the rules and regulations of Harris County as administered by the Permits Group.

Requirements

  • A high school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent is required.
  • A minimum of Two (2) years of construction, Engineering, Surveying, plan reviewing or regulatory enforcement experience, OR an Associate degree from an accredited university with major coursework in Engineering, Architecture, or other closely related field.
  • Be able to use Microsoft software and read construction plans.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in Engineering, Architecture or other closely related field.
  • Proficient in the fields of construction, plan reviewing or regulatory enforcement; certified floodplain manager.
  • Excellent customer service and communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Regulate the floodplain by issuing residential permits using Harris County regulations.
  • Assist constituents with regulatory questions and inquiries regarding Harris County regulations in person, on the phone, and via email.
  • Perform additional duties during emergency response situations for the community, such as hurricanes or floods.
