The RN position in the 3G Medical Surgical unit at Springfield Memorial Hospital is a critical role focused on providing high-quality care to patients recovering from surgical procedures, particularly those related to colorectal surgeries. This post-surgical unit caters to a diverse patient population, primarily adults and geriatrics, who may present with various medical needs, including ostomies, drains, and wound management. The role emphasizes the importance of pain management, with many patients receiving intravenous pain medications as part of their recovery process. The RN will be responsible for monitoring patient conditions, administering medications, and collaborating with a multidisciplinary team to ensure optimal patient outcomes. In this position, the RN will utilize advanced medical equipment and technology, including the Pyxis and Omnicell systems for medication dispensing, as well as the Cerner Electronic Health Record system for patient documentation and bedside barcode administration. The RN will also be involved in the management of pain medications, ensuring that patients receive appropriate care during their rehabilitation. The work schedule includes shifts from 0645 to 1915 and 1845 to 0715, with an expectation of working every other weekend. The RN will always work as part of a team, which includes other nurses, patient care technicians, and a unit secretary, ensuring a collaborative approach to patient care. Flexibility is required, as the RN may need to float to other general medical-surgical units based on hospital needs and individual competencies. The unit consists of 21 all-private rooms, with a nurse-to-patient ratio of 1:5-6, allowing for focused and personalized care for each patient. The dress code is flexible, allowing any color scrubs, and comprehensive training is provided, including classroom instruction on computer charting and quality indicators, along with 24 hours of unit-specific orientation.
