The Medical Surgical staff nurse is a Registered Nurse (RN) who utilizes the nursing process to provide comprehensive nursing care to patients receiving therapies within the multidisciplinary activities of the Medical/Surgical Unit. This role involves supervising the work assignments of nursing assistants and reporting directly to the Nurse Manager. The RN is responsible for delivering professional nursing care to all patients in the unit, adhering to the established standards, practices, and philosophies of Carle Richland Memorial Hospital (CRMH). The RN will engage in a variety of nursing activities, including patient assessments, care planning, and the implementation of nursing interventions, ensuring that care is tailored to meet the individual needs of patients and their families. In this position, the RN will perform essential functions such as conducting initial assessments upon patient admission, developing appropriate plans of care, and modifying these plans based on continuous evaluation of patient conditions. The RN is also responsible for maintaining accurate documentation of nursing care provided, which is crucial for the integration of information used by the healthcare team. The RN will take an active role in ensuring patient and employee safety by identifying and reporting safety hazards and incidents, and will communicate effectively with colleagues to resolve issues and enhance professional development. The RN will be skilled in various therapies and procedures, including IV access, injections, and assisting with unit procedures such as chest tube insertion and management. The RN will respond to emergency situations and work effectively as part of a team across all patient age groups, from neonates to geriatrics. Focusing on patient satisfaction is a key aspect of this role, which includes utilizing patient white boards, conducting patient rounding, and implementing bedside reporting. The RN will demonstrate competency in care delivery by reviewing, transcribing, and implementing physician orders in a timely manner, while involving patients and their families in decision-making processes. Additionally, the RN will delegate tasks to healthcare team members and ensure that all patient care activities are completed and documented according to standards.
