The RN - Medical Unit position involves providing primary care to patients in a medical-surgical acute care setting. This role requires the assessment, treatment, care planning, and evaluation of medical care for patients who may arrive from various sources, including the emergency room, doctor's offices, or other hospitals. The patients typically present with a range of medical issues that do not require intensive care unit (ICU) services but may include post-operative care from surgeries such as orthopedics, urology, or neurosurgery. The medical unit handles a variety of diagnoses, including chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), congestive heart failure (CHF), kidney failure, and sepsis, among others. In this role, the RN will be responsible for coordinating individualized, goal-directed nursing care through the nursing process. This includes maintaining nursing standards of care, responding to changing workloads and patient conditions, and ensuring effective communication with patients and their families. The RN will also be tasked with documenting patient encounters, transcribing provider orders, and implementing treatments accurately. Infection control procedures must be strictly followed, and the RN will need to exhibit excellent organizational skills, critical thinking, and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team. The position requires a commitment to maintaining confidentiality and professionalism while managing sensitive situations. The RN will also need to possess strong verbal and written communication skills to effectively interact with various audiences, including patients, families, and healthcare team members.
