About the position

The RN Psychiatric Inpatient position at UNM Hospitals involves providing professional nursing care to patients in a mental health environment. The role includes designing and implementing nursing care plans, administering medications, and ensuring adherence to hospital policies. The nurse will work with diverse patient age groups and conditions, focusing on recovery and patient advocacy.

Responsibilities

  • Interview, examine, and assess the health status of psychiatric patients with various disorders.
  • Observe patient behavior, activities, and mental status; perform triage and crisis intervention.
  • Write treatment plans; coordinate patient drug and procedure activities; administer medication and treatment.
  • Chart and report observed symptoms, reactions, treatments, and changes in patients' conditions.
  • Perform nursing intakes, draw blood and other patient specimens; may perform or coordinate laboratory tests.
  • Educate patients and families on treatment regimens, management of side effects, and compliance with treatment plans.
  • Provide information and facilitate communication between physicians, staff, patients, families, and community.
  • Follow established departmental policies, procedures, and objectives, and safety standards.
  • Enhance professional growth through participation in educational programs and workshops.
  • Perform various administrative functions such as monitoring expenditures and preparing reports.
  • Assist with special tests and procedures, ensuring proper consent has been obtained.
  • Assist with or institute emergency measures for sudden, adverse developments in patients.
  • Administer medication, including IV medication, and document clinical findings.
  • Maintain a safe, comfortable, and therapeutic environment for patients and families.
  • Follow patient safety-related policies and demonstrate proactive approaches to patient safety.

Requirements

  • Bilingual in Spanish and English.
  • Registered Nurse (RN) License in NM or as allowed by reciprocal agreement.
  • BLS Certification.
  • Bachelor's degree in Nursing or related field.
  • 1 year of directly related experience in psychiatric nursing.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patient care.
  • Knowledge of medication administration and care plans.
