About the position

The Safety Officer (SSHO) position is a critical role within the marine construction and dredging industry, specifically designed for individuals with extensive experience in safety management on marine sites. This full-time position is based in Galveston, TX, and involves travel to various project sites across the Gulf Coast region, including locations such as Corpus Christi, Brownsville, and Grand Isle, LA. The SSHO will be responsible for ensuring compliance with safety protocols and regulations on dredging and marine construction sites, which is essential for maintaining a safe working environment for all personnel involved in these projects. In this role, the SSHO will conduct daily site inspections to verify adherence to marine dredging safety standards and lead Job Hazard Analyses (JHA) and toolbox talks to educate crews on safety practices. The SSHO will implement and oversee the Accident Prevention Plan, providing on-site safety education and training to ensure that all team members are equipped with the knowledge to work safely. Collaboration with Quality Control Managers and Superintendents will be necessary to address safety matters effectively, and the SSHO will also be responsible for investigating incidents, completing accident reports, and ensuring that follow-up actions are taken to prevent future occurrences. The position requires a proactive approach to safety management, with the SSHO expected to maintain First Aid Logs and Safety Data Sheets (SDS) for hazardous materials on-site. The SSHO will play a vital role in ensuring that subcontractors comply with all safety regulations, thereby contributing to the overall safety culture of the organization. Responsibilities

  • Conduct daily site inspections to ensure compliance with marine dredging safety standards.
  • Lead Job Hazard Analyses (JHA) and toolbox talks.
  • Implement and oversee the Accident Prevention Plan.

  • Ensure subcontractors comply with all safety regulations.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of safety experience in marine dredging or marine construction (mandatory).
  • OSHA 30-Hour Construction Certification is required.
  • Strong knowledge of EM 385-1-1, OSHA 29 CFR 1910, and 1926 regulations.
  • Ability to work independently and make critical safety decisions on-site.
  • Must be able to obtain a TWIC card.
  • Excellent communication skills for safety training and reporting.
