About the position

The Un-Registered Medical Technologist under general supervision performs a wide variety of routine and specialized studies on blood, urine, and body fluids samples as requisitioned by a physician to obtain data for use in diagnosis and treatment of disease following established standards and practices. Independent judgement, professional education, and certification are required. Will assist the department Laboratory Supervisor in the day-to-day operations of the department.

Responsibilities

  • Consults with and keeps supervisor informed of activities, needs, and problems.
  • May be assigned to a specific department in the lab or may rotate in a minimum of two or a maximum of all departments.
  • May act as charge person of a department in the absence of the department supervisor.
  • Establishes own work plan and priorities using and modifying established procedures to ensure timely completion of assigned work in conformance with established policies and standards.
  • Comply with established standards and practices/procedures.
  • Assemble supplies and equipment and assure proper functioning and cleanliness of equipment and work area.
  • Make sure specimens are properly labeled, collected, received, and stored properly for future reference and then properly discarded.
  • Record, review, certify, and report test results as required.
  • Maintain adequate quality control procedures to ensure proper functioning of instruments, reagents, and procedures.
  • Recognize instrument malfunction and out-of-control test results and take corrective action.
  • Assist in teaching and training of new employees.
  • Follows established hospital laboratory departmental and regulatory standards, policies, procedures, and precautions in the performance of all job duties to ensure a safe work environment for self and others.
  • Follows safe work practices and utilizes all required personal protective equipment and other safety equipment when required.
  • Demonstrates respect and regard for the dignity of all patients, families, visitors, and fellow employees to ensure a professional, responsible, and courteous environment.
  • Commits to recognize and respect cultural diversity for all customers (internal and external).
  • Communicates effectively with internal and external customers with respect of differences in cultures, values, beliefs, and ages utilizing interpreters when needed.

Requirements

  • Twelve months of clinical education/training in a school of Medical Technology or its equivalent.
  • Requires three months on-the-job training to become familiar with the hospital's policies and procedures and to become proficient in all phases of the job requirements.
  • Baccalaureate degree in Medical Technology or related science. If degree is in a related science, requires at least 5 years (full time) acceptable clinical experience in Blood Banking, Chemistry, Hematology, Immunology, or Microbiology within the last 10 years. At least two years must be under the supervision of a pathologist (certified by the American Board of Pathology or eligible) or an appropriately certified medical scientist and a certified medical technologist.
  • A Baccalaureate degree in Medical Technology ASCP eligible such as a recent graduate that is awaiting taking the MT test.
  • ASCP eligible or other acceptable Certification agency.
