Sales Tax Auditor Assistant

About the position

The Sales Tax Auditor Assistant plays a crucial role in supporting the Sales Tax Audit Manager by assisting in the examination of management operations, internal control systems, and accounting records of businesses. The position focuses on ensuring compliance with local ordinances and Louisiana Revised Statutes related to sales tax, use tax, and occupational license tax. The assistant will conduct audits, prepare reports, and engage with taxpayers to ensure accurate tax filings and compliance.

Responsibilities

• Assist in conducting independent audits of financial documents and records of taxpayers.
• Prepare audit reports outlining findings and recommending corrective actions.
• Review and analyze taxpayer requests for refunds or credits.
• Research businesses for potential audits and perform special projects.
• Prepare correspondence between departments, taxpayers, and outside audit firms.
• Prepare payment agreements and track payments made by taxpayers.
• Research current sales tax laws to respond to citizen inquiries.
• Ensure taxpayer compliance through personal visits, phone calls, and mail communications.
• Scan and quality control auditing documentation stored electronically.
• Review requests for payment plans, liens, suits, and closures.
• Monitor and balance bank and escrow accounts.
• Analyze monthly reports to ensure all collection periods are adequately addressed.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in accounting, business administration, finance, or a related field with at least 12 semester hours in accounting.
• Knowledge of Microsoft Office, including Outlook, Word, and Excel.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills.
• Ability to read, analyze, and interpret various instructions and documents.
• Proficient in performing detailed work involving numeric data and advanced arithmetic calculations.
• Ability to define and solve in-depth problems and establish effective working relationships.
