About the position

The School Bus Driver Substitute is responsible for safely transporting students to and from school while maintaining proper student behavior and ensuring compliance with safety regulations. This role requires effective communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively in an educational environment. The position may be part-time or full-time, with a pay rate of $21 per hour.

Responsibilities

  • Attend meetings as needed
  • Follow directives (written, oral, electronic)
  • Perform general bus driver assignments
  • Transport pupils safely to and from school daily, according to established routes and time schedules
  • Maintain proper student behavior on the bus while driving
  • Notify the Director of Transportation of any hazardous road, bridge, or other conditions that may jeopardize the safety of children being transported
  • Sweep the interior of the bus daily and clean headlights, signal lights, and tail lights
  • Keep bus windshields, windows, and rear view mirrors clean at all times
  • Complete a daily record sheet including mileage and any bus malfunction
  • Observe all rules, regulations, policies, and procedures regarding qualifications of bus drivers, safe operation of buses, and personal characteristics
  • Perform other assigned duties and/or responsibilities as deemed appropriate by the supervisor
  • Maintain data security as applicable
  • Maintain confidentiality with staff, student, and family information
  • Operate in a respectful, responsible manner

Requirements

  • Effective communication and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to problem-solve in a fast-paced work environment
  • Ability to work collaboratively in an educational setting
  • Regular and predictable attendance
  • Qualified to be employed as a School Bus Driver per Civil Service and NYS Education Department guidelines
  • Possession of a valid NYS Commercial Drivers License (CDL) with a Passenger (P) endorsement at the time of appointment
  • Ability to pass a qualifying physical exam
  • Demonstrate good eye-hand-foot coordination and good spatial perception for safe driving
  • Ability to bend, kneel, sit, and stand for extended periods of time
