About the position

The Secretary 1 position in the Tax Department of Kanawha County operates under general supervision at the full performance level. This role is primarily responsible for providing administrative support to the Assistant Director of the Compliance Division. The individual in this position will respond to inquiries that require a solid understanding of unit policies, procedures, and guidelines. Key duties include answering and screening telephone calls, managing outgoing calls, and handling mail by screening and responding to routine correspondence. The Secretary will also be responsible for scheduling appointments and making travel arrangements for supervisors, ensuring that all logistical details are meticulously organized. In addition to these responsibilities, the Secretary will compose form letters and routine correspondence, type reports, manuscripts, and other documents using standard word processing equipment. Attention to detail is crucial, as the Secretary will proofread and correct documents to ensure they are in finished form. The role may also involve maintaining sick and annual leave records, acting as a receptionist, and performing various clerical duties as needed. The Secretary may attend meetings, take notes, and relay important information to relevant parties. Proficiency in Google Docs or Microsoft Word is essential for this position, as is the ability to assist Office Assistants with tasks such as recording tax liens and managing return mail when necessary. Responsibilities

Requirements

  • Graduation from a standard high school or the equivalent.
  • Four years of full-time or equivalent part-time paid experience performing clerical duties at the Office Assistant 2 level, including typing.
  • Experience must include screening and routing telephone calls and composing routine correspondence.
  • College hours or related business school or vocational training may be substituted for up to two years of the required experience.
