About the position

The Unit Secretary position at the Federal Bureau of Prisons involves providing administrative support within a correctional facility. The role is essential for maintaining the flow of information and assisting both staff and inmates with inquiries related to correctional programs. The incumbent will be responsible for various clerical tasks while ensuring the security and safety of the institution is upheld.

Responsibilities

  • Handle routine inquiries from staff and inmates, providing technical assistance and answering questions regarding correctional programs.
  • Receive visitors to the office, determine the nature of their requests, and direct them to the appropriate staff or provide information personally.
  • Review correspondence prepared for the supervisor and other staff members.
  • Assist the Unit Manager and staff in expediting office work and procedural aspects.
  • Maintain security of the institution as part of the correctional responsibilities.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship is required.
  • Education: 4 years of education above high school level in a relevant field for GL-05; graduate education may be credited for GL-06 in specific cases.
  • Experience: At least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level in federal service for both GL-05 and GL-06.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in a correctional environment or similar administrative roles.
  • Familiarity with office automation and computer systems.
