About the position

The Senior Assistant Resident Engineer position at NCDOT involves skilled professional engineering work, primarily overseeing minor and major construction projects within the Division 6 / District 2 Resident's Office in Cumberland County. The role requires proficiency in plan reading, highway engineering calculations, and the use of survey instruments. The engineer will manage project oversight, supervise employees, and ensure compliance with environmental and safety regulations while providing consultation and technical assistance to clients and stakeholders.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise employees and evaluate their performance on construction projects.
  • Manage minor and major construction projects, ensuring compliance with standards and specifications.
  • Conduct consultation, investigation, evaluation, and planning for engineering projects.
  • Provide project management oversight, including supervision of lower-level technical and professional staff.
  • Prepare monthly and final estimates, and communicate with contractors and inspection personnel.
  • Review contract plans, specifications, and materials testing results.
  • Evaluate data collected by field personnel and prepare technical letters and reports.
  • Exercise judgment and decision-making that impacts life, health, safety, and the environment.
  • Promote a safe working environment and ensure adherence to safety regulations.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in an applicable field of engineering from an accredited institution.
  • Three years of progressively responsible experience in engineering or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Knowledge of contract administration and highway construction projects.
  • Experience in interpreting construction plans, specifications, and regulations.
  • Ability to train, plan, coordinate, and supervise the work of other employees.

Nice-to-haves

  • Registration as a professional engineer by the North Carolina Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors.
  • Proficiency in contract administration software.
  • Experience in customer service related to engineering concepts.
