The Naval Nuclear Laboratory (NNL) is seeking an experienced chemical engineer to join our Materials Manufacturing area within the Fuel and Poison Materials (FPM) unit. This unit is responsible for the research and testing of nuclear fuel materials, which includes test design, specimen fabrication, manufacturing development, and characterization. The primary goal of this role is to deliver fuel systems that enhance core performance objectives while improving quality and reducing costs. The FPM unit manages several development contracts with external vendors to execute this mission, creating a dynamic and innovative environment that spans from development to laboratory and factory deployment. As a chemical engineer in this role, you will work collaboratively within a team that includes engineering, laboratory, facility, and compliance organizations to enable and conduct test programs. Your responsibilities will encompass the development and fabrication of unique materials systems, which may involve small-scale production demonstrations and factory installations, testing, and deployment. You will also be tasked with developing and implementing optimized process parameters, planning, designing, modeling, analyzing, manufacturing, and deploying laboratory equipment that includes nuclear, chemical, mechanical, structural, and electrical components and systems. Additionally, you will document progress, analyze results, and conduct presentations as needed. This position may require occasional travel to domestic vendors, estimated at 3 to 6 times per year, to support the various aspects of the role. The ideal candidate will possess a strong background in chemical engineering or a related field, with a focus on the research, development, and deployment of equipment and facilities for the production of novel nuclear materials, components, and systems.
