About the position

The Renewable Energy Finance (REF) team at Huntington Bank is dedicated to originating project finance and non-recourse transactions specifically for renewable energy facilities. This business line primarily focuses on tax equity transactions within the renewables sector, which includes wind, solar, storage, and other forms of renewable investment. The REF team is currently seeking a talented and ambitious Senior Commercial Portfolio Manager to join the Renewable Energy Underwriting and Portfolio Management team. This team collaborates with internal partners to underwrite and manage the existing portfolio of loans, supporting the growth of the Commercial Bank while ensuring a scalable and well-managed business. In this role, the Senior Commercial Portfolio Manager will work closely with clients, Relationship Managers, and the Credit Department to underwrite and build a high-quality project finance portfolio. The position encompasses all aspects of due diligence in credit underwriting, financial modeling, approval, execution, and documentation. Additionally, the Senior Commercial Portfolio Manager will conduct post-closing operational and contractual activities, safeguarding the operational and financial performance of the renewable energy projects financed by Huntington Bank. The responsibilities include serving as the primary point of contact for underwriting credit transactions for the assigned portfolio and new clients, recommending capital structures, managing approvals for amendments and waivers to credit facilities, and monitoring the financial performance of portfolio companies. The role also involves reviewing financial statements, projection models, and project cash flow models to develop a focused analytical foundation for credit decisions. The Senior Commercial Portfolio Manager will prepare thorough credit underwriting reports, ensuring that underwriting and structuring decisions reflect a commitment to strong asset quality and prudent capital use, while maintaining profitability hurdles for the portfolio. Furthermore, the position requires obtaining and negotiating all necessary documentation, acting as a value-added member of deal teams, assisting Relationship Managers in marketing presentations, identifying potential problem accounts, and mentoring junior professionals.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the point person when underwriting credit transactions for the assigned portfolio and new clients.
  • Recommend capital structure and accumulate all data necessary to perform focused analysis.
  • Manage approvals for amendments and waivers to credit facilities, as well as monitor the financial performance of portfolio companies.
  • Review financial statements, projection models, project cash flow models, and all other relevant financial and non-financial data to develop a concise focused analytical foundation for a credit decision.
  • Prepare thorough credit underwriting identifying industry concerns, market trends, financial trends, and other pertinent underwriting issues to present to the approving Credit Officer.
  • Ensure underwriting and structuring decisions reflect a commitment to strong asset quality.
  • Recommend prudent use of capital and maintain profitability hurdles for the portfolio keeping the risk/return balance in mind.
  • Obtain and negotiate all necessary documentation including credit agreements, notes, pledges, and collateral, ensuring that the documentation correctly reflects rates, terms, and special conditions.
  • Act as a value-added member of deal teams with loan syndication, origination, and distribution for syndicated credits within the portfolio or for new prospects.
  • Proactively assist Relationship Manager in development of marketing presentations and pitch books highlighting product solutions for client needs.
  • Identify potential problem accounts and work to improve the Bank's position in undesirable situations.
  • Mentor junior professionals.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in finance, accounting, economics or related field.
  • 5+ years of experience in one or a combination of the following: underwriting, credit, or portfolio management in project finance for power and renewables sector; competence in Financial Modeling.
  • Strong knowledge of the different power and energy markets in the US including the regulatory environment.
  • In-depth knowledge of the Renewable Energy Project Finance industry.

Nice-to-haves

  • MBA, CFA (or progressing to the Charter) or CPA is desirable.
  • Detailed knowledge of renewable energy project design, functioning, and operations & maintenance (O&M), power purchase agreements, and a strong understanding of renewable energy project finance.
  • Strong knowledge and understanding of corporate banking credits, cash flow analysis, and underwriting guidelines.
  • Ability to thoroughly analyze credits on an independent basis and communicate findings in a concise manner.
  • Strong analytical skills with high attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Excellent interpersonal as well as verbal and written communication skills.
