About the position

The Data Security Engineer role at General Motors is focused on ensuring the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of the organization's data assets. The successful candidate will collaborate with cross-functional teams to implement robust security measures, identify and mitigate data security risks, and respond to security incidents. This position is accountable for governing data movement, managing data monetization activities, and defining compliance policies for enterprise data assets.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement data security strategies, policies, and procedures to protect the organization's data assets.
  • Conduct regular assessments and audits of data systems and infrastructure to identify vulnerabilities and recommend security enhancements.
  • Collaborate with IT teams to design and implement secure data architectures, networks, and systems.
  • Monitor and analyze data security logs and alerts to detect and respond to security incidents in a timely manner.
  • Investigate and resolve data incidents, including conducting forensic analysis and implementing remediation measures.
  • Implement and manage access controls, authentication mechanisms, and encryption protocols to safeguard data.
  • Stay updated on the latest data security threats, vulnerabilities, and industry best practices, and proactively recommend security enhancements.
  • Conduct security awareness training for employees to promote a culture of data security and compliance.
  • Collaborate with external vendors and partners to ensure the security of data shared or accessed by third parties.
  • Participate in incident response planning and exercises to ensure effective incident management and recovery.
  • Maintain documentation of data security policies, procedures, and incident response plans.
  • Collaborate with compliance teams to ensure data security practices align with relevant regulations and standards.
  • Provide guidance and support to IT teams and business units on data security best practices and compliance requirements.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Security, or a related field.
  • 7+ years' experience in enterprise organizations where analytics, data, and insights fueled key growth.
  • Strong knowledge of data security principles, best practices, and industry standards.
  • Familiarity with data encryption, access controls, authentication mechanisms, and network security protocols.
  • Strong knowledge of data pipeline technologies and tools, such as Kafka, Hive, Spark, Python Airflow, PowerBI or similar.

Nice-to-haves

  • Master's degree is a plus.
  • Experience leading teams for a Fortune 500 company.
