About the position

Eaton's AER MSD Mission System Division is currently seeking a Senior Mechanical Engineer to join our team at the Davenport, IA facility. This position is pivotal in supporting the development, design, and testing of Stirling cycle cryogenic cooler components and assemblies. The successful candidate will be responsible for performing calculations related to cryogenic thermal design requirements and performance, as well as modeling detailed parts and assemblies to analyze design feasibility. The role requires a commitment to continuous improvement, teamwork, cooperation, respect, and integrity, ensuring that all product design activities align with project or proposal schedules. In this role, you will provide technical design, analysis, and guidance for new product development and product improvements. You will have decision-making authority on behalf of Mechanical Engineering for system and component design, guiding and directing applicable Integrated Product Team (IPT) technical decisions and accomplishing objectives. You will lead efforts to solve problems related to product design, inspection, manufacturing, and testing encountered by vendors, operations, and customers. Additionally, you will plan, organize, control, and lead multiple simultaneous projects, establishing and overseeing the accomplishment of project objectives. As the primary technical contact for multiple teams, you will serve as a liaison between Mechanical Engineering and both internal and external customers. You will support targets and milestones for project budgets and schedules, participating in resolving program change of scope issues with the Engineering Lead and Program Management. Your responsibilities will also include creating and guiding the creation of technical documents, such as engineering drawings, test procedures, and design review materials, and presenting product design findings and recommendations to customers and management. Ensuring standardization of products and adherence to engineering processes across multiple projects will be crucial, as will supporting continuous improvement by providing input to standard processes and procedures. You will also lead cross-functional Root Cause and Corrective Action (RCCA) investigations, providing engineering input and technical expertise for failure investigations and customer-returned hardware.

Responsibilities

  • Provide technical design, analysis, and guidance for new product development and product improvements.
  • Lead and participate in efforts to solve problems with product design, inspection, manufacturing, and test encountered by vendors, operations, and customers.

  • Establish and oversee accomplishment of multiple project objectives.
  • Serve as primary technical contact for multiple teams and liaison between Mechanical Engineering and internal and external customers.
  • Support targets and milestones for project budgets and schedules.
  • Participate in resolving program change of scope issues with Engineering Lead and Program Management.
  • Create and/or guide the creation of technical documents, including Engineering drawings, test procedures, and design review material.
  • Present product design and substantiating data and analysis, design findings and recommendations to customers and management.
  • Ensure standardization of products and adherence to engineering processes across multiple projects.
  • Support continuous improvement by offering input to standard processes and procedures.
  • Conduct component design study and improvement for cost reduction and first-time yield.
  • Lead and participate in cross-functional Root Cause and Corrective Action (RCCA) investigations.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering from an accredited institution.
  • Minimum of three (3) years engineering experience.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without company sponsorship, now or in the future.
  • This position requires use of information or access to hardware which is subject to the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR). All applicants must be U.S. persons within the meaning of ITAR.

Nice-to-haves

  • Minimum of five (5) years experience in the aerospace industry with a thorough understanding of mechanical design and pneumatic systems.
  • Experience with FEA (Finite Element Analysis) and CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) and software programs used in their assessment (ANSYS).
  • Design for Six Sigma (DFSS), Design for Manufacturability (dfM), Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA), Design of Experiments (DOE), and Root Cause and Corrective Action (RCCA) principles.
  • Experience with Geometrical Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T).
