About the position

The Senior Forest and Fire Ecology Research Associate at Colorado State University is responsible for leading applied research programs focused on forest and fire ecology. This role involves developing and sustaining research initiatives that include field sampling, remote sensing, and landscape analysis to enhance forest management practices and collaborative adaptive management in Colorado and the Intermountain West. The position requires collaboration with various stakeholders to address scientific questions and produce impactful research outputs.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and submit proposals to secure funding for projects as Principal Investigator or Co-Principal Investigator.
  • Maintain communication with CFRI team members to identify strategic goals and opportunities.
  • Establish and maintain communication with organizations involved in forest restoration and wildfire risk management.
  • Develop research or monitoring questions associated with project goals and deliverables.
  • Oversee the development and implementation of project tasks and data analysis.
  • Assist in hiring, training, and supervising staff for project deliverables.
  • Lead and contribute to discussions about research opportunities and approaches.
  • Evaluate and communicate knowledge from monitoring and research results through presentations and publications.

Requirements

  • PhD in a natural resource-related field (ecology, forestry, wildfire, geography, or management) plus at least 2 years of relevant work experience.
  • Expertise in forest and fire ecology and management in western conifer forest ecosystems.
  • Authorship on published peer-reviewed scientific journal papers relevant to the position.

  • Experience in designing, analyzing, and reporting on data from field-based sampling and remote sensing.

  • Proficiency with spatial and tabular data analysis in R or Python.
