About the position

The Mechanical Engineering Discipline's Undersea Sensors & Structures Department at RTX Corporation is seeking an experienced Mechanical Design Engineer to join our team in Portsmouth, Rhode Island. This position requires a minimum of 6 years of experience in mechanical design, documentation, fabrication, assembly, and testing of high-reliability electronic systems tailored for military and government applications. As part of an integrated product team (IPT), the successful candidate will leverage their broad technical expertise in mechanical engineering and related disciplines to lead the design and development of electronic enclosures and the packaging of both custom and Commercial Off the Shelf (COTS) electronics. These systems will be utilized in various applications, including land and ship-based systems, undersea vehicles, and sensors for mine hunting and neutralization. The role demands strong technical and analytical skills, an understanding of production needs, and the ability to conceptualize designs based on mechanical engineering principles. The candidate will be expected to work collaboratively in a fast-paced IPT environment, demonstrating strong written and oral communication skills. Proficiency in CAD software is essential, with experience in PTC CREO being a significant advantage. The position may also involve some travel between Raytheon and customer sites, emphasizing the need for flexibility and adaptability in a dynamic work environment. Responsibilities

  • Lead detailed design, documentation, fabrication, assembly, and testing of high-reliability electronic systems.
  • Collaborate with an integrated product team (IPT) to develop electronic enclosures and packaging for COTS electronics.
  • Conceptualize designs based on mechanical engineering principles and production needs.
  • Utilize CAD software for 3-D modeling and design documentation.
  • Monitor and report on program costs and schedules.
  • Manage configuration management systems and ensure compliance with project requirements.
  • Provide task leadership and guidance to junior engineers and team members.

Requirements

  • A University Degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent experience.
  • Minimum of 6 years of experience in mechanical design, documentation, and fabrication of complex electronic systems.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience with program cost and schedule monitoring and reporting.
  • Familiarity with configuration management systems.
  • Experience with 3-D modeling software, preferably PTC CREO.
  • Task leadership experience on relevant projects.
  • Experience on DoD programs.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing).
  • Experience with COTS hardware selection and integration.
  • Experience managing programs using Earned Value Management System (EVMS).
  • Experience with undersea electronics, sensors, and structures design and documentation.
