About the position

The Senior Mechanical Systems Design Engineer is responsible for delivering various engineering outputs, including the design of aircraft potable water and waste mechanical systems, equipment selection, 3D modeling, overseeing development testing, substantiation documents, test plans, and test reports. The role involves performing complex assignments that may require the development of new or improved products, processes, or techniques. The engineer will evaluate the feasibility and effectiveness of proposed engineering tests, products, and equipment, and contribute to successful project completion by resolving issues such as conflicting design requirements and difficult coordination requirements. The position also requires coordination and support of project activities with other operating or engineering units to ensure participation of appropriate staff in project completion. The engineer will assist in determining project objectives, review and approve design data, generate artifacts, reports, and design reviews, and participate in professional organizations to maintain current knowledge of technical innovations.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver various engineering outputs including design of aircraft potable water and waste mechanical systems.
  • Perform complex assignments requiring development of new or improved products, processes, or techniques.
  • Evaluate feasibility and effectiveness of proposed engineering tests, products, and equipment.
  • Interpret principles, theories, and concepts within the engineering specialty.
  • Resolve issues such as conflicting design requirements and difficult coordination requirements.
  • Coordinate and support project activities with other operating or engineering units.
  • Assist in determining project objectives and contribute to comprehensive project design.
  • Review and approve design data throughout technical maturity phases.
  • Review project-related documentation for accuracy.
  • Initiate and maintain design data throughout technical maturity phases.
  • Generate artifacts, reports, and design reviews for compliance evidence.
  • Participate in professional organizations to maintain knowledge of technical innovations.
  • Perform other related duties as required.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering from a four-year college or university.
  • At least five years of related experience and/or training, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Design knowledge of fluid power handling equipment.
  • Experience with interpreting and creating equipment specifications.
  • Proficiency in potable water/waste and gray water aerospace design practices.
  • Proficiency in CAD modeling of parts and constraint assemblies.
  • Working familiarity with ANSI Y14.5 and Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GDT).
  • Experience with tolerance stack-ups, fits, and clearances.
  • Design experience with mechanical components and fastening methods.
  • Ability to provide engineered solutions for aircraft lavatory mechanical systems.
  • Experience in reviewing specifications and assessing requirements.
  • Ability to identify compliance differences between specified requirements and existing capabilities.
  • Experience in developing qualification documents.
  • Ability to review customer comments on qualification documents.
  • Experience in interfacing with customers, systems engineers, and program managers.
  • Ability to work with management and supply chain to ensure testing happens as planned.
  • Experience in conducting and participating in tests to validate new product designs.
  • Ability to interface with suppliers and other development groups.
  • Experience with 3D routing of water and air hoses.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience utilizing Siemens NX CAD software, Teamcenter PLM, and Altium or equivalent PCB layout tool.
  • 3D modeling experience with NX, CATIA, or equivalent software.
  • Experience using simulation tools such as CFD and FEA.
  • Understanding of detail component design.
  • Working knowledge of aerospace materials, processes, and finishes.
  • Experience in the development and integration of aircraft equipment and electro-mechanical systems.
  • Knowledge of electronic discrete and surface mount components.
  • Knowledge of aerospace standards, materials, processes, and finishes.
  • Experience with manufacturing processes including machined elements, forging, casting, injection molding, thermal forming, and sheet metal fabrications.
  • Testing experience including overseeing development testing and writing test plans and reports.
  • Understanding of RTCA DO-160 qualification.
  • Experience with LabVIEW or other data acquisition systems.
  • Hands-on experience with assembly and troubleshooting.
  • Experience with commercial aircraft monuments or other interior products.
