Responsibilities
- Possesses competency in all three major sections of the laboratory (Blood Bank, Hematology, and Chemistry).
- Follows the laboratory's established policies and procedures for proper specimen collection, including patient preparation (if applicable), labeling, handling, preservation or fixation, processing or preparation, transportation and storage of specimens.
- Follows the laboratory's procedures for specimen handling and processing, test analyses, reporting and maintaining records of patient test examinations.
- Adheres to the laboratory's quality control policies, documents all quality control activities, instrument and procedural calibrations and maintenance performed.
- Follows the laboratory's established corrective action policies and procedures whenever test systems are not within the laboratory's established acceptable levels of performance.
- Identifies problems that may adversely affect test performance (i.e., specimen integrity issues) or reporting of test results and either must correct the problems or immediately notify the supervisor/manager/lead tech/designee.
- Documents all corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from the laboratory established performance specifications.
- Performs proficiency testing in accordance with established policies and procedures, treating proficiency testing samples in the same manner as patient specimens.
- Performs and records appropriate quality control procedures and results, performs and documents corrective action, if necessary, and notifies supervisor/manager/lead tech/designee of out-of-control/discrepant results immediately.
- Reports all critical values in a timely manner and documents in the laboratory information system according to policy.
- Ensures correct patient / specimen identification throughout the entire testing procedure.
- Demonstrates a broad knowledge of the department where assigned (i.e., procedures, quality control, etc) and the department's relationship with the other areas of the laboratory.
- Consults with appropriate personnel when test findings are abnormal or questionable.
- Assists the supervisor/manager/lead tech/designee in complying with all Joint Commission, New York State Department of Health and Federal regulations.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology or related science from an accredited school
- Licensed under the NYS Dept of Education as a Clinical Laboratory Technologist
- Knowledge of hematology, chemistry, blood bank, and/or microbiology preferred
- Hospital experience desired
- Must work weekends and holidays as scheduled
- Good oral and written communication skills essential.
