About the position

The Senior Network Engineer at McLane Advanced Technologies is responsible for deploying and supporting network infrastructure for a Department of Energy contract. This role involves troubleshooting, maintaining Cisco and Palo Alto devices, and developing documentation to enhance network operations. The engineer will work in a lights-out environment, ensuring effective network performance and reliability while coordinating with customers and managing multiple issues.

Responsibilities

  • Deploy and provide ongoing support for Cisco routers and Catalyst switches, including tier 2/3 troubleshooting and engineering.
  • Develop and update standard operating procedures for network provisioning and maintenance tasks.
  • Operate and maintain Cisco and Palo Alto devices, ensuring all changes are documented.
  • Create and update engineering documents, drawings, and IP addressing assignments.
  • Work in a remotely administered lights-out environment using OOB management and serial consoles.
  • Develop documentation to improve current network operating procedures.
  • Draft configuration change control proposals for submission to the CCB.
  • Create and update topology diagrams and associated documentation for each office location and network enclave.
  • Install and operate open-source software for network performance testing and monitoring.
  • Troubleshoot connectivity and performance issues involving switches, routers, desktops, printers, and servers.
  • Coordinate multiple open issues and interface with customers at all levels.
  • Review log events and operate network management applications for fault detection and performance metrics.
  • Be flexible to work nights, weekends, and holidays for network maintenance and troubleshooting.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Security, or related field.
  • 3-5 years of experience supporting Gigabit Ethernet switched LAN networks.
  • Working knowledge of Spanning Tree Protocol (STP), VLAN Trunking Protocol (VTP), and 802.1q Trunking.
  • Experience with Cisco VOIP configuration.
  • Strong understanding of TCP/IP stack and application transport protocols.
  • Experience supporting heterogeneous LAN, WAN, and 802.11 wireless networks.
  • Hands-on experience with Cisco network devices (Catalyst 3560/3860, Nexus 5000, ASR, ISR-series routers, and ASA security appliances).
  • Active DOE or DOD Security Clearance.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with scripting network operations using Python or Ansible.
  • Experience with Wireshark, Ethereal, TCP-Dump or equivalent packet decoding tools.
