About the position

The Senior Principal Nuclear Engineer - Formulation at Blue Origin plays a critical role in the Space Systems Development (SSD) business unit, focusing on the design and development of nuclear propulsion and power systems for space applications. This position requires a strong commitment to safety and collaboration, as the engineer will guide multi-disciplinary teams in aligning engine and power system architectures with strategic goals. The role involves managing complex projects, mentoring junior engineers, and contributing to the advancement of sustainable space exploration.

Responsibilities

  • Work with advanced concept program organizations to distill high-level requirements into derived requirements for power and rocket propulsion systems.
  • Trade engine and power nuclear reactor systems and components for optimized solutions, assessing mass properties and cost estimates.
  • Collaborate with design engineers to assess conceptual designs, perform trade studies, and develop integrated design solutions.
  • Mature and publish system-level reactor architecture, including operational modes and functional flow block diagrams.
  • Develop Level 1 reactor engine and power system requirements and verification methodologies, including risk assessments.
  • Work with test groups to develop test and risk reduction plans for reactor and engine components.
  • Perform mission analysis focused on optimizing engine and power design characteristics across mission concepts.
  • Coach and mentor less experienced engineers and represent the program in technical discussions with external customers.

Requirements

  • B.S. degree in nuclear engineering or equivalent technical field.
  • 8+ years of experience in the design, development, and/or transient analysis of reactor systems.
  • 5+ years of experience mentoring and guiding less experienced engineers.
  • Knowledge of reactor modeling and simulation, and space nuclear systems.
  • Working knowledge of thermodynamics, fluid dynamics, heat transfer, and control systems.
  • Ability to lead teams and manage multiple tasks effectively.
  • Strong communication skills for conveying analysis results and maintaining professional relationships.

Nice-to-haves

  • M.S. or Ph.D. in an engineering discipline.
  • Knowledge of nuclear thermal propulsion systems and in-space nuclear electrical power generation systems.
  • Experience with reactor system development and testing.
  • Familiarity with space flight systems such as liquid rocket engines and thermoelectric generators.
  • Proficiency in modeling tools and scripting languages like MATLAB/Simulink and ROCETS.
  • Experience with U.S. Government research agencies such as NASA and DARPA.
