About the position

The Senior Service Engineer - Instrumentation and Controls at Wärtsilä Energy is responsible for solving technical and operational problems at customer power plants, performing preventative maintenance, and supporting project delivery for new builds and commissioning. This role requires strong technical expertise in instrumentation and controls, as well as the ability to manage customer relationships and communicate effectively with various stakeholders. The position involves significant travel, with approximately 80% of the year spent on service jobs at customer facilities across Canada, the US, and the Caribbean.

Responsibilities

  • Solve technical and operational problems at customer power plants.
  • Perform preventative maintenance activities according to maintenance programs.
  • Support New Build and Commissioning teams on project delivery.
  • Prepare service work reports and other relevant documentation related to site or customer visits.
  • Manage and maintain good relationships with the customer during work execution.
  • Take ownership of technical discussions and be the point of contact between internal and external stakeholders during service execution.
  • Travel to customer facilities for service attendance within Canada, US, and the Caribbean.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Industrial Controls & Automation or Electrical Engineering or equivalent.
  • Minimum of five (5) years' experience in relevant fields.
  • Knowledge of PLC development, programming, and troubleshooting (Rockwell, Siemens, Schneider, etc.).
  • Experience with DCS troubleshooting and HMI systems (Wonderware and others).
  • Familiarity with various industrial networks and protocols (Modbus TCP, Profibus, CAN-bus, CIP, EtherNet/IP, DeviceNET, ControlNET, Industrial Ethernet).
  • Experience with OPC systems, Windows server, and UNIX servers.
  • Knowledge of variable frequency drives and advanced programming of firewalls and routers.
  • Experience with reciprocating gas engine control systems (MAN, MaK, Caterpillar, Bergen, etc.).
