About the position

In the role of Senior Structures Engineer at HDR, you will play a pivotal role in supervising and conducting structural analyses, evaluations, and designs. Your expertise will be essential in developing design options and recommendations for various projects. You will lead and assist in the preparation of contract documents, including drawings, specifications, and design documentation, ensuring that all outputs meet the highest standards of quality and compliance. Your responsibilities will also include leading the design of new hydraulic structures and rehabilitating existing ones, such as dams, spillways, gates, and floodwalls. You will perform engineering assignments that require critical thinking and creativity, particularly for unique structural elements that may not have specific code-based guidance. Collaboration is key, as you will coordinate structural design efforts with multi-disciplinary teams, ensuring that all aspects of the project are aligned and integrated. As a project manager, you will work independently while providing oversight and mentorship to junior staff. This role may involve expanding HDR's structural engineering services, particularly in client and strategic project development with various government agencies and utilities. You will also review the work of others in your group, ensuring that design assumptions, calculations, and compliance with design standards are thoroughly checked and validated. The position is primarily located in Northern California (Folsom/Sacramento), but alternate locations may be considered. You will also be expected to perform other duties as needed, contributing to the overall success of HDR's projects and initiatives.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise or conduct structural analyses, evaluations, and designs; develop design options or recommendations
  • Lead, assist with, or provide oversight for preparation of contract documents including drawings, specifications, design documentation and criteria
  • Lead design of various new and/or rehabilitation of hydraulic structures, including dams, spillways, gates, outlet works, diversion structures, retaining walls, cofferdams, floodwalls, water conveyance structures, and foundations
  • Perform engineering assignments that may require critical thinking and creativity to address unique structural elements that have limited or no specific code-based guidance
  • Coordinate structural design with multi-disciplinary teams
  • Work independently as project manager and provide oversight and mentorship of project and junior staff
  • Review tasks undertaken by others in the group including checks of design assumptions, calculations, criteria, load cases, code review and compliance with design standards
  • Perform other duties as needed

Requirements

  • Bachelors degree in Civil or Structural Engineering
  • Minimum of 10 years experience in structural design and analysis
  • Demonstrable experience with leading structural design projects, including analysis, reporting, drawing specification, production, and engineering during construction support
  • California PE or SE licensure
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, AutoCAD, Mathcad, SAP2000, or similar analytical software
  • Strong interpersonal, speaking, and writing skills

Nice-to-haves

  • Master's degree in Civil or Structural Engineering, Structural emphasis preferred
  • Field experience related to construction, inspection, or related instrumentation
  • Demonstrated knowledge of structural, seismic, risk assessment, risk informed decision making involved in dam safety design, inspection, remediation, and construction
  • Strong background in finite element modeling and knowledge of seismic dynamic analysis procedures including response spectrum and time history analyses
