About the position

Torrent Technologies is seeking a Senior Underwriter to join our team, with the option to work from Overland Park, Kalispell, or remotely. In this pivotal role, the Senior Underwriter will be responsible for applying complex National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) rules and regulations to individual flood insurance policies. The successful candidate will consistently apply Standard Operating Procedures to ensure regular positive performance and compliance with underwriting guidelines. Under the supervision of the Underwriting Manager, the Senior Underwriter will review, analyze, and handle quotations while servicing an existing book of business. This position requires the use of appropriate software to evaluate recommendations, determine policy approvals, and process all additional policy-related information. The ANFI designation is preferred; if not already obtained, the candidate will be required to secure this designation within the first six months of employment. In the initial 30 days, the new hire can expect to participate in a robust training program that includes classroom instruction, on-the-job training, and computer-based training tailored to their underwriting and flood insurance experience. The role involves working an 8-hour shift within our operational hours of 7 AM to 7 PM, Monday through Friday. The Senior Underwriter will primarily service clients and colleagues via phone and chat, necessitating comfort in a phone-based position while delivering top-tier customer service. The successful candidate will join a team of highly motivated and knowledgeable individuals, ranging from senior to junior underwriters, in a desirable work environment that offers numerous employee amenities. What can you expect from this role? You will underwrite new submissions to ensure that new policies are accurate and compliant with guidelines. Responsibilities also include processing endorsements, cancellations, and reinstatements, handling billing issues, and completing policy issuance. The Senior Underwriter will review all underwriting information, including applications, photographs, elevation certificates, and third-party internet resources, to ensure accurate policy underwriting. Providing exceptional customer service to agents and responding to inquiries via phone, online chat, and email while meeting required production KPIs is essential. The role also involves de-escalating difficult customer situations and resolving them effectively. The candidate must demonstrate strong time management skills, work independently with moderate supervision, and actively participate in team activities, including daily huddles and training opportunities. Effective communication, both verbal and written, is crucial for maintaining positive relationships with agents, customers, and coworkers.

Responsibilities

  • Underwrite new submissions to ensure new policies are correct, per guidelines.
  • Process endorsements, cancellations, and reinstatements, and handle billing issues and complete policy issuance.
  • Review all underwriting information to include applications, photographs, elevation certificates, and third-party internet resources to correctly underwrite the policy.
  • Provide customer service to agents.
  • Respond to inquiries via phone support, online chat, and emails, meeting required production KPIs as defined by leadership.
  • De-escalate difficult customers and bring situations to complete resolution.
  • Demonstrate a clear understanding of time management techniques by working independently with moderate supervision and as a participating and contributing member of a team.
  • Actively and consistently participate in and contribute to group activities, including daily huddles, team meetings, and training opportunities.
  • Communicate in a concise, tactful, prompt, and effective manner both over the phone and by email.
  • Maintain a positive working relationship with agents, customers, coworkers, and others.

Requirements

  • 3+ years of Underwriting Flood insurance experience is required.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills along with the ability to work in a team environment.
  • Strong interpersonal skills for interacting with team members and clients.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Basic to intermediate technical knowledge of systems and procedures.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Basic computer knowledge and comfortable using the Microsoft suite, particularly Word, Excel, and Outlook.
