About the position

As a Senior Underwriter at Summit Consulting, you will play a crucial role in the risk selection and pricing processes for workers' compensation programs. This position is based in our Gainesville, GA office, which offers a hybrid work environment, allowing you to work three days in the office and two days from home. You will be responsible for evaluating risks, making informed decisions on coverage and limits, and ensuring compliance with company guidelines. Your independent judgment and initiative will be essential in supporting our business goals and maintaining a high level of customer service. In this role, you will analyze coverage requests and determine the appropriate terms to offer, while also pricing business in accordance with established guidelines. You will assess the quality of risks and initiate loss prevention actions as necessary. Additionally, you will be tasked with ordering and screening various reports, such as Motor Vehicle reports and loss history reports, to aid in the underwriting process. Building and maintaining effective relationships with both internal and external customers will be key to attracting and retaining profitable business. You will also be responsible for interpreting and marketing our products and services, developing relationships with agents and brokers through in-person visits and telephone interactions. Applying underwriting rules, rating manual rules, and insurance laws will be part of your daily responsibilities. Furthermore, you may provide guidance and assistance to lower-level positions, contributing to the overall growth and development of the team. This position may also involve performing other duties as assigned, ensuring that you are adaptable and responsive to the needs of the business.

Responsibilities

  • Has responsibility for risk selection/rejection, pricing, retention, growth, and profitability per divisional objectives.
  • Uses independent judgment and initiative to support business goals.
  • Maintains a high level of customer service.
  • Analyzes coverage and limit requests and decides what terms to offer.
  • Prices business in accordance with company guidelines.
  • Assesses risk quality and compliance within company guidelines and initiates appropriate loss prevention actions.
  • Orders and screens miscellaneous reports needed in the rating and underwriting processes, such as Motor Vehicle reports, loss history reports, credit checks, outside inspections, loss control, etc.
  • Develops and maintains effective business relationships with internal and external customers/coworkers in order to attract and retain profitable business.
  • Interprets, explains, and markets products and services.
  • Develops relationships with agents & brokers through in-person visits and telephone interactions.
  • Applies underwriting rules and guidelines, rating manual rules, and insurance laws and regulations.
  • May provide guidance and assistance to lower level positions.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent experience in Business, Liberal Arts, or a related discipline.
  • Generally, 3 to 6 years of related experience in underwriting or a similar field.
  • Progression toward certification in area of expertise preferred; appropriate certifications could include Associate in Underwriting (AU), Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU), Certified Insurance Counselor (CIC), Program in General Insurance (INS), or Associate of Risk Management (ARM).
