About the position

This underwriting position is for a Life Sciences underwriter within Liberty Mutual / Ironshore Healthcare. The primary focus of this role is on Products and Professional Liability for Life Sciences customers. The underwriter will be responsible for underwriting policies within their authority, making analytical, data-driven decisions based on the information provided, including pricing the risk. In certain regions of North America, the underwriter may handle complex or unusual policies, particularly those with high individual line sizes. This role also includes the opportunity to work on Healthcare Professional Liability for other Liability Products, making prior experience in this area a valuable asset. The underwriter will manage a portfolio of brokers, agents, and clients, leveraging their market presence and knowledge to develop and underwrite profitable business while acting as a representative for Liberty Mutual. Maintaining strong relationships with agents and brokers is crucial, and the underwriter will be expected to contribute ideas for product development and participate in its execution. Additionally, the role involves collaboration across teams, stakeholders, and partners, including Underwriting Support, Claims, and Actuarial teams. Mentorship is also a component of this position, as the underwriter will guide junior underwriters and new hires, although not in a direct managerial capacity. The underwriter may analyze the department's portfolio and suggest areas for development, as well as recognize and communicate emerging trends within their line of business expertise. This position may have in-office requirements depending on the candidate's location, reflecting Liberty Mutual's commitment to fostering an inclusive and supportive work environment.

Responsibilities

  • Manages portfolio of brokers/agents and clients.
  • Leverages market presence and knowledge to develop and underwrite profitable business, acting as a representative for Liberty.
  • Maintains a strong market presence, including established relationships with agents and brokers.
  • Strengthens existing relationships and develops new ones.
  • Contributes ideas for product development and participates in development and execution.
  • Contributes to team projects (e.g., process/tool improvement).
  • Understands the work implications of relevant legislation and regulation.
  • Collaborates effectively across teams, stakeholders, and partners (e.g., UW Support, Claims, Actuarial, Directors of Underwriting in GRS North America).
  • Mentors junior underwriters and new hires (not as a line manager).
  • May analyze department's portfolio and make suggestions for development.
  • Recognizes and communicates emerging trends of exposures within line of business expertise.

Requirements

  • Degree in Business or equivalent typically required.
  • A minimum of 2.5 years, typically 3 or more years, of progressive underwriting experience and/or other related experience.
  • CPCU or professional insurance designation preferred.
  • Proven analytical ability to evaluate and judge underwriting risks within scope of responsibility.
  • Competence with all phases and aspects of the underwriting process, and proficiency in the use of qualitative and quantitative tools and techniques.
  • Demonstrated comprehension of complex technical underwriting issues and capability to define and implement necessary underwriting and administrative processes/workflows.
  • Proven track record of developing and underwriting profitable business.
